FDNY EMS Station 32
FDNY EMS Station 32, located at 347 Bond Street in Gowanus, has served the neighborhood since its opening in 2009. The station’s involvement with The Dear Neighbor Project came through direct neighborhood outreach, and staff responded with enthusiasm to the opportunity to bring public art to their site.
The mural series installed here includes works such as Rainy Day Blues, Swamp Heroes, Red Boot, and Apartment Flood. Together, they reflect the human cost of repeated flooding and the resilience of first responders and neighbors alike.
Special thanks to FDNY and Captain Randy Li and Chief Martin Braun, whose leadership and dedication were instrumental in bringing this collaboration to fruition. Their efforts reflect the FDNY’s broader mission to serve and protect New York City’s diverse communities.

Dear Neighbor,
how has flooding in Gowanus affected you?

DeAndre Bennett
Both of the places that I lived, and had a lot of flooding, like it really robbed me of my peace of mind.

Alfonso Rosario
I had over $42,000 in damages. It's like super expensive to get flood insurance or they just won't insure it at all.

Dear Neighbor,
did you know that Gowanus was an active flood zone?

Joe Ciccone
I knew the area and I felt comfortable buying into it, but nobody warned me about the flooding.

Joe Ciccone
My wife was crossing the street to get to the apartment. The water was very murky, so she could not see — and she fell. One leg went into a manhole.

Joe Ciccone
I've been nagging people in the Department of Sewers, to get something to cover the manholes, such that they don't leave them completely open.

Joe Ciccone
What’s going to happen when you get flooded? You have your plans, you have yourself an exit plan, make sure you’re set up and ready to go.
