Powerhouse Arts

Located at 322 3rd Avenue in Gowanus, Powerhouse Arts is a contemporary art space dedicated to supporting artists through fabrication, education, and public engagement. Housed in a revitalized former power station, the building now serves as both a cultural anchor and creative hub within the Gowanus neighborhood.

The collaboration between Powerhouse Arts, The Dear Neighbor Project, and Van Alen Institute emerged from a shared commitment to community-centered storytelling and climate awareness. Installed in the main lobby, this exhibition features voices of Gowanus residents navigating the everyday realities of rising water—from flooded basements to altered routines and shifting neighborhoods.

Special thanks to the Powerhouse Arts team for their collaborative spirit and care throughout the development of this site-specific exhibition.

I developed this mindset where, when I saw rain coming, I started being like: How much water is coming, should I be home, do I need to pick everything valuable up off the floor?

Dear Neighbor,

how has flooding in Gowanus affected you?

Alfonso Rosario

I had over $42,000 in damages. It's like super expensive to get flood insurance or they just won't insure it at all.

Joe Ciccone

My basement used to constantly get flooded. Uh, the little cafeteria that was on the corner of Carroll Street constantly had to close because they were flooded.

Dear Neighbor,

how has the community shown up for you during flood events?

Kelly Hayes

I just sent a text out to everybody I know. It said, it's really bad this time guys, if anybody has any time, we're going to be here all day and probably all day tomorrow. It'd be greatly appreciated – any help you could offer.’ 25 people showed up. It was amazing.
